Carbon-14 Confirms the Timeline: The Tübingen Fragment

The preceding article followed the Quran down into the attic of the Great Mosque of Sana’a, where a collapsed ceiling laid bare a graveyard of books and where the parchment, after forty years of patient labor, could at last speak aloud. There we saw that the oldest material witness to the Quran does not undermine the transmission but confirms it: the same text, recorded early, with precisely the small Companion variants that the classical sources have always described. Sana’a yielded a time capsule of the Uthmanic standardization. But Sana’a, however crucial, was bound to a single place and a single find. The question that remained beneath it was broader. How old are the Qurans that are not written in Hijazi script but in the upright, angular Kufic script that generations of Western scholars took to be late. If the Kufic script truly arose only in the second or third century AH, as some orientalists maintained, then every Kufic Quran manuscript would automatically belong to a late, suspect stratum. And then the textual history of the Quran would show a gap that is filled only centuries after the Prophet ﷺ.

In November 2014 that gap was closed, and it was not closed by a Muslim.

A university library in the south of Germany, a physics laboratory in Switzerland, and a sample of animal parchment large enough for a radiocarbon measurement: from those three elements emerged a result that did not attack the Islamic timeline but confirmed it, from a direction in which no Muslim scholar had had any hand.

A Fragment That Waited a Century

The Eberhard Karls Universität in Tübingen possesses one of the older manuscript collections in Germany. Among the countless pieces its library acquired in the nineteenth century was a Quran fragment bearing the shelf mark Ms M a VI 165. It is not a complete Quran. It is seventy-seven folios of parchment, and those folios carry the text of the Quran from Surah al-Isra, verse 35, to Surah Ya-Sin, verse 57. That is, measured against the extent of the whole Quran, roughly twenty-six percent of the text. More than a quarter. Not some loose leaf of verses, but a substantial portion of the Book, written in the angular Kufic script.

The fragment had already been in German hands for more than a century. It lay catalogued, described, and known in scholarly circles, but it had never been interrogated about its age with the precision of modern natural science. Palaeographers had looked at it and placed it, on the strength of its script style, in the seventh or eighth century. That was a judgment based on the shape of the letters, an estimate, not a measurement. And it was precisely around that estimate that an old debate turned. For if the dating depended on the question of how late the Kufic script arose, then it depended on an assumption that had been contested for more than a century.

The breakthrough came when the university decided to have a small piece of the parchment itself dated. Not the ink, not the letters, but the animal skin on which the text was written. Radiocarbon dating measures the decay of carbon-14 in organic material, and parchment is organic: it is the skin of an animal that at a certain moment lived and died. The method therefore measures when the animal died, and with it when the parchment came into being, not when it was written upon. But in practice parchment was written upon shortly after it was prepared, because it was costly and was not kept blank for years. The age of the skin is thereby a reliable upper bound and a good approximation for the age of the text.

There is a certain irony in the fact that it was precisely this method that had to render the verdict. Radiocarbon dating is a product of twentieth-century physics, developed to date organic remains from the distant past, and it has no interest whatever in the question of how old a Quran manuscript is. It knows no theology, no transmission, no polemic. It measures a ratio between two forms of carbon and translates that into years. Whoever dislikes the result cannot wave it away with an appeal to bias, for the measurement has no opinion. It is, in the most literal sense, blind to the stakes of the debate in which it happened to land. And it is precisely that blindness that makes it a reliable witness. A witness who does not know which party he serves cannot be suspected of partiality.

At the same time honesty requires that the limits of the method be named from the outset, for radiocarbon dating is powerful but not omnipotent. It yields no single year with absolute certainty, but a window with an accompanying probability. It dates the parchment, not the ink, and thus, strictly speaking, it measures the animal, not the writer. And it depends on a correct calibration against known reference points. These are not weaknesses that render the evidence worthless; they are the conditions under which the evidence has meaning. A reader who understands these conditions can appraise the result at its true value without overstating it. And as already became clear with Sana’a, it is precisely that sober handling of the limits of the evidence that makes the evidence strong, not weak.

What the Laboratory Measured

The sample was sent to a radiocarbon laboratory in Zürich. There the carbon-14 ratio in the parchment was measured and converted into a calendar age, with the statistical margins that attend every radiocarbon measurement.

The result was unambiguous enough to announce. The laboratory placed the parchment, with ninety-five percent probability, in the period between 649 and 675 CE. Those numbers deserve to be read precisely, for any rounding would weaken the evidence or would exaggerate it, and both are undesirable. Not roughly the seventh century. Not broadly the time of the first caliphs. But a window of twenty-six years, with a quantifiable certainty of ninety-five percent, that begins in the year 649 and ends in the year 675 of the Christian era.

To weigh those numbers, one must lay them beside the Islamic timeline. The Prophet ﷺ died in the year 632 CE. The standardization of the Quranic text under Uthman ﵁ took place in the years that followed, in the period that the sources situate around the year 650 CE, when the third caliph had the official Mushaf written out and had copies sent to the great cities of the empire. The radiocarbon window of the Tübingen fragment, 649 to 675 CE, falls precisely over that moment. The parchment stems from the generation of the Companions ﵃ who had still seen the Prophet ﷺ with their own eyes. It is materially a document from the first century AH, written within a few decades of the death of the Prophet ﷺ himself, and in the earliest part of that window possibly even within the lifespan of some who had known him.

Let the meaning of that overlap sink in fully. In the year 650 CE countless Companions ﵃ were still alive. Aisha ﵂ was still alive. Countless huffaz who had heard the Quran directly from the mouth of the Prophet ﷺ were teaching in Medina, in Kufa, in Basra, in Damascus. The parchment that was measured in Zürich is no older than their memory and no younger than their teaching; it falls right in the midst of it. That is a community that could not afford an error in the text without that error being noticed at once, for the oral standard still lay living in hundreds of breasts. When a substantial portion of the Quran, more than a quarter, materially stems from precisely those years, then it dates not from a twilight zone of forgetting but from the clear noon of living testimony. It is not an echo from a distant century; it is an imprint from the room where the Quran was still being taught by people who had witnessed its revelation.

One can also measure the distance the other way around, and then it stands out more sharply still. Between the revelation and this fragment lie, in the most unfavorable case, roughly four decades, and in the most favorable case even less. Compare that with the textual history of other great writings from antiquity, where between the original event and the oldest substantial manuscript there often lie two, three, or more centuries. In that company the Quran stands exceptionally close to its source. The Tübingen fragment is not the only evidence for this, but it is one of the sharpest, precisely because it rests not on an estimate of the script style but on a measurement of the material.

The announcement drew attention, because it had now anchored with a physical measurement a fragment that had always been suspected to be early. But the real significance did not lie in the sensation. It lay in the script style of the fragment. For this early manuscript, dated with ninety-five percent probability to the seventh century, was written in Kufi.

And with that it touched upon a discussion that had been smouldering for more than a century.

The Thesis That Kufi Had to Be Late

To understand why a Kufic fragment from the seventh century is so significant, one must know an old orientalist thesis. It holds, in its barest form, that the Kufic script is a late invention, and that any Quran manuscript written in Kufi therefore cannot be older than the second or third century AH. The name most bound up with this thesis is that of Beatrice Gruendler, who in her study of the development of the Arabic script argued that the Kufic Mushafs belong to the second and third centuries AH.

The appeal of that thesis was great, for it offered an elegant point of leverage. If the script was late, then the earliest complete Qurans were late. And if the earliest complete Qurans were late, then a gap of one and a half to two centuries opened up between the revelation and the oldest written evidence. Into that gap all manner of conjectures could be lodged: redaction, revision, later unification, a history that did not square with what the Muslims told about themselves. The thesis that Kufi was late was thereby not merely a technical palaeographic detail. It was a crowbar with which the whole early textual history could be prised open.

One must understand why a palaeographic argument could carry such weight. Palaeography is the study of the form of script, of the way in which letters are shaped, joined, and placed. A trained eye can place a hand roughly in time from the form of the letters, just as one can estimate the century of a building from its style. But that estimate is and remains an estimate. It rests on the assumption that the development of the script followed a neat, linear line, in which older and younger forms succeeded one another tidily without overlap. If that assumption holds, then one can derive a date from the script style. If that assumption does not hold, if different script forms were in use side by side, then the whole reasoning collapses. And that is precisely what Azami would demonstrate: that the Arabic scripts did not run in a neat line one after another, but side by side, each with its own characteristics, none of them confined to a single place or a single century.

There was, moreover, a circular reasoning in the thesis that was seldom laid bare. One dated a Kufic Quran manuscript late because it was Kufic, and one maintained that Kufi was late because the Kufic Qurans looked late. The argument ate its own tail. As long as there was no independent dating, the circle could not be broken, and the assumption kept confirming itself. What was needed was a dating that came not from the script style but from outside, from a source that had nothing to do with palaeography. A dated inscription in stone was such a source. And, a century later, a radiocarbon measurement of the parchment itself.

It is precisely this thesis that al-Azami ﵀ systematically dismantles in his chapter on Arabic palaeography. He devotes a separate section to it, titled the emergence of the various scripts and the issue of dating the Kufic Mushafs. His method is not one of polemic but of demonstration. He lays dated inscriptions on the table, stone by stone, and shows that the Kufic script was already mature and widespread in the first century AH.

The Stones That Bear the Date

Azami’s argument rests not on literary transmission, but on something that will not let itself be reasoned away: inscriptions in stone, with a date carved into them.

He begins with the earliest. A tombstone from Aswan, in the south of Egypt, bears an inscription dated to the year 31 AH. According to the scholar who studied the stone, this is the earliest dated Kufic inscription we know. Azami adds a careful qualification, one that shows his intellectual honesty. The script on this stone does indeed look angular, and it is therefore often called Kufi, but he places a question mark against that designation. The cities of Kufa and Basra were founded only in the year 17 AH, and it seems unlikely that a city built itself from nothing would, within a mere fourteen years, have developed a script named after it that had already penetrated as far as the south of Egypt. That qualification is important, for it refutes the thesis from two sides at once. Either the script is Kufi, and then it already existed in the year 31 AH. Or it is not Kufi but an older angular script, and then the whole idea that Kufi was the standardized late form has been misrepresented. In both cases the thesis that the angular script must be late falls.

That double blow deserves attention, for it shows how Azami reasons. He does not reach for the easiest answer, namely simply to declare that the stone proves Kufi to be early. He weighs the designation itself, and he shows that the opponent loses in either case. If one calls the stone Kufi, then Kufi is early. If one denies the designation and says it is an older angular script that may not yet be called Kufi, then one concedes that the angular script is older than Kufi, and then the supposed late origin of the angular Quranic script is untenable. The opponent can choose neither branch without undermining his own thesis. That is not a rhetorical trick, but a careful logical trap, built around a single dated stone. And it is characteristic of the way this series of witnesses works: not with indignation, but with evidence that will not let itself be evaded.

Then Azami builds his series further. At Ta’if, to the east of Mecca, there is an inscription in Kufic script with a prayer, dated to the year 40 AH. The text reads as a blessing: mercy and blessings of Allah ﷻ upon Abdur-Rahman ibn Khalid ibn al-As, written in the year forty. In the same region stands a dam attributed to Mu’awiya ﵁, with an inscription in unadorned Kufi, dated to the year 58 AH.

After that come the pieces that are not only Kufi but also bear Quranic text. Near Mecca a dated Kufic inscription has been found with a Quranic verse, dated to the year 80 AH. And a second inscription near Mecca, based on Quranic verses and likewise in Kufi, bears the year 84 AH. These are Quranic verses, in the Kufic script, carved into stone, in the first century AH, dated by the hand that wrote them.

Azami draws the sober conclusion from this. These last examples, together with many others, confirm that the Kufic script had already acquired considerable currency throughout the Muslim world even in the first century AH, from Egypt to the Hijaz, from Syria to Iraq. These inscriptions, he writes, run directly counter to Gruendler, who asserts that all Kufic Mushafs belong to the second and third centuries AH. Already in the middle of the first century the Kufic script was in wide use, especially on coins, and there is no plausible reason whatever why it should have had to wait a century or longer before it was used for Mushafs. Stronger still, he notes, the Mushaf of Samarqand attributed to Uthman ﵁, which belongs to the first half of the first century AH, is itself written in Kufic script.

And then follows his conclusion, which rings like a verdict. With several examples of Kufic script drawn from inscriptions of the first century, he writes, we have refuted the theory that Kufic Mushafs can be dated only to the second or third century AH.

This was the argument as it stood on paper in 2003, built up out of dated stones. It was complete and it was convincing. But it remained an argument from inscriptions and coins, from pieces of stone and metal. What it did not have was a dated Quran manuscript itself, a parchment with the Quran on it, whose age had not been estimated on the strength of the script style but measured in a scientific laboratory.

Eleven years later that parchment came.

Why the Two Witnesses Do Not Know Each Other

Here is a boundary that must be carefully preserved, because it carries the integrity of the whole argument. Al-Azami wrote his book in 2003. The radiocarbon measurement of the Tübingen fragment was not announced until November 2014. Azami therefore does not cite that measurement, and could not have. He did not know that there lay in Tübingen a Kufic fragment that a physics laboratory would date to within a few decades of the revelation. His argument stood entirely on its own feet, built up from dated inscriptions, long before the radiocarbon dating confirmed it.

That makes the convergence all the stronger. For what in fact happened. A Muslim scholar argued in 2003, on the strength of dates carved into stone, that the Kufic script was already mature in the first century AH and that there would therefore be nothing strange about an early Kufic Quran. Subsequently, eleven years later and without any coordination, a Western laboratory measured a Kufic Quran fragment that fell precisely in that early period. The two witnesses did not know each other. The one was a text scholar who worked with inscriptions, the other a scientific method that worked with carbon-14. They made no arrangement. And yet they pointed to the same result.

That is the strength of independent confirmation. When two witnesses conspire, their agreement is worthless. When two witnesses do not know each other, do not share each other’s methods, and yet from opposite starting points arrive at the same conclusion, then that conclusion gains a weight that neither alone could have borne. The Islamic transmission had always said that the Quran was recorded early. Azami had shown with inscriptions that the Kufic script made that early recording technically possible. And the laboratory in Zürich measured, without any interest in the Islamic cause, that an early Kufic Quran manuscript really did stem from that time.

It is tempting, but incorrect, to say that Azami predicted the Tübingen fragment. He did not predict it, for he did not know it existed, and he named it nowhere. What he did was something subtler and more convincing. He demonstrated that the discovery of an early Kufic Quran manuscript would be no anomaly, no miracle demanding explanation, but exactly what one would expect on the strength of the dated inscriptions. He prepared the ground without knowing what would appear on it. When the fragment came, no one had to ask how a Kufic Quran could be so old, for that had already been answered by stones carved centuries earlier. The measurement of 2014 surprised only those who had not read the inscriptions. For those who had read them, it was a confirmation that had merely kept them waiting.

And here lies a deeper point about the nature of truth. A lie needs coordination to remain standing; its various parts have to be tuned to one another, or else they contradict one another. Truth does not need that coordination. It can bear witnesses who have never met, who come from different centuries, lands, and convictions, and who measure with different instruments, for they all point to the same thing because there is only one reality that they describe. The stone of Aswan from the year 31 AH, the inscription at Ta’if, the letters of the chancery, the palimpsest of Sana’a, and now the parchment of Tübingen: none of these witnesses knew of the others, and yet they speak with one voice. That is not the pattern of an invented story. That is the pattern of an event that really took place.

The Direction of the Evidence

There is something remarkable about the direction from which this confirmation comes, and it is worth pausing over for a moment.

The modern discussion of the reliability of the Quran has been conducted for more than a century on a terrain that had been marked out by orientalism. The assumption was that the written evidence must be decisive, and that Muslim transmission must be regarded with distrust as long as it was not corroborated by independent, preferably Western, material. For the believer that is a curious point of departure, for the Quran was never in the first place borne by parchment, but by the breasts of the huffaz, the believers who knew the Book from beginning to end by heart and passed it on in an unbroken chain from reciter to reciter. The written Quran was a support for that memory, not a replacement for it.

That distinction is not merely a pious detail; it touches the core of why the Quran behaves differently from other ancient texts. In a writing that exists only in script, every manuscript is a link in a fragile chain, and an error in one copy passes into all the copies transcribed from it. The text can then slowly drift without anyone noticing, because there is no independent standard against which to gauge it. With the Quran it is otherwise, for alongside the written chain there always ran a second, oral chain, and the two chains continually checked each other. A scribal error could not survive long, for the huffaz would hear it. A memory error could not survive long, for the written skeleton would show it. The two transmissions together formed a system of double control that no purely written tradition possesses. The written evidence is therefore, for the Muslim, not the source of certainty, but one of the two witnesses that confirm each other. And precisely because the Tübingen fragment strengthens the written testimony, it indirectly also strengthens the trust in the system as a whole.

But precisely because the debate was conducted on the terrain of the written evidence, it is telling that the written evidence now confirms the transmission. The Tübingen fragment does not refute something that the Muslims believed. It refutes something that some orientalists asserted. It confirms the timeline that the Islamic sources have always proclaimed, and it does so from the most unimpeachable quarter imaginable: a Western university, a Swiss laboratory, and a physical measurement that has nothing to do with theology.

For whoever weighs the evidence without prejudice, the burden of proof is thereby reversed. It was never the Muslim transmission that had to explain the gap of centuries, for that transmission had never postulated such a gap. It was the critics who had postulated the gap, on the strength of the assumption that Kufi had to be late. And it is precisely that assumption that the parchment from Tübingen breaks. A Kufic fragment, more than a quarter of the Quran, dated between 649 and 675 CE at ninety-five percent probability, leaves no more room for the thesis that a Kufic Quran must by definition be late.

This reversal of the burden of proof is not a rhetorical gain but a methodical one. In scholarship it is the one who makes a claim who bears the burden of substantiating that claim. The Muslim transmission made the claim that the text was recorded early, and it bore that burden with its unbroken chain of reciters. The critics made the opposite claim, namely that the early recording was an illusion and that the real textual history lay centuries later. That counterclaim rested on a single pillar: the assumption that the written evidence was late because Kufi was late. As soon as that pillar falls away, the whole counterclaim falls, and the original transmission remains standing, now borne no longer by the chain of reciters alone but also by the very parchment that had been meant to be brought against it. The instrument that was to prove the critique now proves its opposite.

It is worth noting that the Muslim community here had to change nothing in its own account. It needed no new defense, no adjustment of the timeline, no revision of the transmission. The timeline had stood firm for fourteen centuries. The only thing that changed was that a part of the academic world that had disputed the timeline now saw a measurement result on the table that supported that timeline. The burden of adjustment lay not with the believer, but with the sceptic.

What the Fragment Does and Does Not Say

Scrupulousness requires that we here also honor the limits of the evidence, for exaggeration would harm the argument just as much as underestimation.

The Tübingen fragment does not prove, on its own, that the whole present Quran is word for word identical to the text of the year 650. That kind of textual identity is borne by other witnesses, by the continuity of the reciters, by the mutual agreement of the early manuscripts, and by the comparison of the Uthmanic rasm down through the centuries. The Tübingen fragment carries twenty-six percent of the text, not one hundred percent. What it does prove, and with great force, is the age. It proves that a substantial, Kufic-written portion of the Quran materially stems from the generation of the standardization. It knocks the ground out from under the thesis that the Kufic script, and with it the early Kufic Qurans, would be a late appearance.

It is also good to repeat what exactly the radiocarbon dating measures. It measures the age of the parchment, that is to say of the animal skin, not of the ink. It places the animal whose skin was used in the window of 649 to 675 CE. Because parchment was written upon shortly after preparation, that is an excellent approximation for the age of the text, but the measurement itself concerns the material. That precision is no weakness of the evidence; it is the reason the evidence is reliable. A measurement that knows its own limits is stronger than an assertion that conceals those limits.

And finally there belongs here the restraint that characterizes this whole series of articles. The window of 649 to 675 CE is a window, not a point. The most probable lies in the middle, but the measurement gives a range, and that range must be respected as a range. Even in the later part of that window, around the year 675, the fragment still lies within a few decades of the Prophet ﷺ and in the midst of the time when the Uthmanic copies were circulating through the empire. The evidence does not need that precision to be convincing. It is convincing precisely because it is honest about what it measures.

The Timeline That Confirms Itself

If one sets side by side the witnesses that this series of articles has summoned, a picture emerges that closes in from all sides.

The script already existed before the revelation, as the dated inscriptions of Zabad, Jabal Usays, and Harran make clear, which show that a mature Arabic alphabet was in use a century and more before the Prophet ﷺ. The chancery of the Prophet ﷺ produced dated, sealed letters of state, tangible evidence that the movement that recorded the revelation documented it in writing from the very start. The Uthmanic standardization fixed the text and distributed it, and the palimpsest of Sana’a shows that standardization physically in action, with a Companion codex beneath and the official text over it. And now the Tübingen fragment adds the keystone that the written testimony needed: a substantial Kufic Quran manuscript, scientifically dated to within a few decades of the revelation, that removes the last orientalist evasion, namely the notion that Kufi was too late to be able to be early.

The remarkable thing is that each of these witnesses comes from a different quarter. The inscriptions come from stone. The letters come from the state archive. Sana’a comes from a graveyard of books beneath a roof. Tübingen comes from a nineteenth-century German collection, by way of a Swiss laboratory. They made no arrangement. They share no method. And yet they all point to the same timeline, the timeline that the Muslims have told about themselves for fourteen centuries: a text, revealed early, recorded early, and since then passed on unchanged.

Al-Azami had substantiated that timeline with inscriptions when he wrote in 2003 that the theory of the late Kufic Mushafs had been refuted. He did not know that eleven years later a radiocarbon measurement in Zürich would underscore his point once more with a number. That is the nature of truth that does not need itself to be defended: it is confirmed by witnesses who did not know that they were testifying.

The Quran is not dependent on the parchment of Tübingen, and never was. The Message lived in the breasts before it was poured into the skin, and it lives there still. But for whoever demands a physical measuring rod, for whoever makes the written evidence the judge, the fragment from Tübingen speaks a clear verdict. The parchment from the time of the Companions ﵃ carries the Quran that is still recited today, in the same script that was called late, from the same century that was thought empty. The measurement is no sensation and no revelation. It is a confirmation, cool and numerical, of something the believer already knew and that history has now also written down.

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ

"Verily, it is We who have sent down the Reminder, and verily, it is We who are its guardians."

Surah al-Hijr 15:9

What was measured in Zürich is not the preservation itself, but a shadow of it upon parchment. The preservation is promised, and the promise is from Allah ﷻ. The fragment from Tübingen is only one of the many silent witnesses that, across fourteen centuries, have seen that promise come true.

And it is not the last witness to let carbon-14 speak. What the laboratory in Zürich did for Tübingen, a second laboratory would do again some years later, this time in England, for two unassuming leaves of parchment that had lain unnoticed for ninety years in a university collection. There too the radiocarbon dating would yield a window that reaches into the time of the Companions ﵃. In the next article we therefore travel to Birmingham, where carbon-14 testifies for the second time.
